BURLINGTON, Vt. -Vermont State College system workers are demanding the administration pay for the protection of their recently stolen personal information.
Two unions say the workers they represent should be reimbursed for expenses incurred because a laptop computer containing employee Social Security numbers, birth dates, home addresses and bank account numbers was stolen Feb. 28.
System Chancellor Robert Clarke said the school system is considering paying the costs.
The computer in question was stolen in late February from the car of an information technology employee. The laptop contained the personal and financial data of approximately 20,000 former employees and students at all five state colleges.
Despite the theft occurring Feb. 28, officials did not notify banks until March 27. School officials also did not indicate until recently that the information on the computer was not encoded.
According to Clarke, there is no indication that the data on the computer has been misused.
