RUMNEY, N.H. —Police are investigating an act of vandalism that caused tens of thousands of dollars of damage at Russell Elementary School, where vandals covered the floors, ceilings and walls of certain buildings in paint.
Authorities were alerted of the incident Monday when a smoke detector went off around 4:15 a.m. Fire crews contacted police when they arrived on the scene and saw what happened, reports WMUR.com.
Police believe at least three people broke into the school by cutting the screen from a second-floor window. The intruders, who left behind fingerprints and sneaker tracks, used oil-based paint used for afterschool programs to cover the cafeteria, classrooms and the gymnasium. Additionally, the vandals discharged a few fire extinguishers.
The assailants attempted to break into the principal’s office with no luck, and an attempt to break into the school safe was unsuccessful. No valuables were taken during the attack.
