BLACKSBURG, Va. — A judge has dismissed Virginia Tech President Charles Steger as a defendant in two $10 million wrongful death claims brought against the university by the parents of two students killed in the 2007 campus shooting.
Unless the decision is reversed, no individual defendants will remain in the case, The Roanoke Times reports. Special Justice William Alexander further ruled that the families’ negligence claims against the commonwealth may go forward.
The ruling could change the legal status of the case from a wrongful death suit to a tort claim against the state. In such claims, the amount of money awarded to the plaintiffs is capped.
Special Justice William Alexander denied a request to reconsider the dismissal of Steger on Feb. 14, The Roanoke Times reports.
