The University of Virginia said hackers from China accessed its information technology systems in an announcement August 14.
The university doesn’t believe any student information was touched, but school officials took down the IT system to upgrade its computer security, according to scmagazine.com.
The school and the security consulting service Mandiant are conducting an investigation to determine if anything was affected. Federal authorities have also been involved for months, but chose not to make the security breach public to make it easier to trace the hackers.
Because it was determined that two current employees’ email accounts were targeted all users are required to change their account passwords.
