CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A coal fire on the grounds near the University of Virginia (UVa) Hospital took more than four hours to douse on Aug. 10.
Nine fire engines were called to battle the blaze, which started at the campus’ heating facility. One firefighter experienced heat exhaustion and was taken to the hospital for treatment. According to officials, he is now fine.
According to WCAV 19, the coal in the heating facility normally burns at 100 degrees, but the temperature had risen to almost 300 degrees.
As a result of the fire, plant employees were evacuated. No other buildings were affected.
