UTICA, N.Y. — The Utica Police Department, in collaboration with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and the Utica City School District, has initiated a pilot program employing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to monitor school dismissals. This innovative approach, launched on Monday, aims to provide real-time surveillance of dismissal activities, ensuring a safer environment for students and staff.
How Drones Enhance School Dismissal Monitoring
The implementation of UAV technology allows law enforcement and school officials to oversee larger areas more efficiently, according to a press release describing the pilot program, reports CNYCentral. By using drones to evaluate traffic flow, pedestrian movement, and student activity, the initiative seeks to gather critical data to assess the effectiveness of current safety procedures and identify areas for improvement.

This initiative comes in response to a series of alarming incidents near Utica City schools, reports CNYHomepage. Notably, on September 9, a student at Donovan Middle School was stabbed during dismissal just outside the school premises. Shortly after, a student was injured by a speeding vehicle near Proctor High School.
These events have underscored the urgent need for innovative solutions to ensure student safety.
Other School Districts Considering the Adoption of Drone Technology
Utica is not alone in exploring the use of drones for school safety. Across the United States, other districts are also considering similar measures.
In Florida, three school districts are set to test drones equipped with nonlethal weapons to respond more effectively to active shooter situations, reports K-12 Dive. Additionally, the Highland Park Independent School District in Texas explored the use of drones for safety purposes earlier this year.
