UPMC Faces Lawsuit Over Last Year’s Clinic Shooting

Published: June 3, 2013

PITTSBURGH — A security officer who was wounded during the mass shooting at Western Psychiatric Institute last year, has filed a lawsuit against the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), the University of Pittsburgh and the gunman’s mother, citing failure to prevent the shooter’s rampage.

On March 8, 2012, Jeremy Byers was shot in the left leg and knee by John Shick, 30, who spent years in and out of various mental institutions, TribLive.com reports. Shick killed a therapist, wounded five others, before a university police officer shot and killed him.

In the lawsuit, Byers claims UMPC did not provide entrance or lobby area with any safety or protective measures for hospital employees. Additionally, the lawsuit states that Shick’s mother did not closely provide support, guidance or assistance to her son.

Byers’ lawsuit is similar to one filed in April by Kathryn Leight, 66, who survived a gunshot in the chest.
