Unreported Elementary School Rapes Lead Pennsylvania Parents to Establish POSSE

Published: February 8, 2007

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – After not being informed of a sexual assault case involving their children, Central Elementary School parents have formed POSSE (Protect Our Students’ Safety Everyday).

Enraged that a case alleging a 12-year-old student raped and sexually assaulted four first-graders on separate occasions was not reported to them for more than two years, parents filed a lawsuit against Allentown School District. They only found out about the incident when the school district recently moved to have the case dismissed by a federal court.

Formed to establish a Parents Bill of Rights with the state, POSSE hopes to leverage community anger to launch its own investigation into the district’s management of the incidents. The group also aims to address other incidents of bullying and related issues amongst its children. It will present a list of demands to the school district at its next board meeting.
