On December 6, 2023, an active shooter opened fire at Beam Hall, home of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Lee Business School, killing three faculty members and seriously injuring another.
At this summer’s Campus Safety Conference (CSC), leadership from UNLV’s Police Services and the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) will present the keynote, titled “Anatomy of an Active Shooter Event on a College Campus.” In this panel-style presentation, all five UNLV and NSHE executives will discuss the timeline of events of their December 6 active shooter ordeal, lessons learned, emergency management protocols and the teamwork and coordination of staff, leaders and government that was required as the event unfolded.
The five panelists featured will include NSHE Chancellor Patricia Charlton; NSHE Vice President of Public Safety Services and Director of University Police Services Southern Command Adam Garcia; UNLV Assistant Director of Threat Assessment and Emergency Management Louise Hardy; UNLV Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Public Safety Services and Clery Compliance Amberly Nelson; and UNLV Assistant Director of Information Technology and Emergency Communications Mark Sakurada.
Moderated by Campus Safety Editor-in-Chief Robin Hattersley, attendees of the keynote panel discussion will leave with an understanding of the scope of teamwork required in responding to and mitigating active shooter/active assailant scenarios, the roles of law enforcement and other campus employees, and how preparedness can minimize future tragedies.
The Campus Safety Conference is collaborative, innovative, and peer-driven, offering resources and training to increase school and college campus preparedness, communication, and response before, during, and after a wide variety of safety and security situations. This year’s conference will be in Atlanta, Georgia, July 8-10, with the “Anatomy of an Active Shooter Event on a College Campus” keynote panel discussion taking place on July 9.
