KINGSTON, R.I. – Campus police at the University of Rhode Island are hoping a new tip line to be implemented in January will help them solve campus crimes.
As the service does not feature a caller ID system, the tip line will allow students to leave information for police without having to reveal their identity. Students are free to leave their contact information if they wish, however.
Officers will also be able to leave alerts and awareness messages about possible campus threats and security concerns on the line’s recording.
The tip line is not intended to replace the school emergency number, which should still be used during actual emergencies.
The line was inspired when officer Mark Chearino began investigating a string of tire robberies on campus. Some of the vehicles were elevated using milk crates, leading Chearino to suspect that someone had to see something.
