The University of Oregon is pleased to announce that registration is open for the First Annual Oregon Higher Education Emergency Management Summit. Although it is impossible to predict exactly when the next crisis or disaster might occur, or the extent to which they might affect a campus, universities can greatly minimize losses from such events through deliberate planning, preparing, and training. Achieving disaster resilience on a campus is an exceedingly complex problem that requires coordination, cooperation, and a focused effort from the entire university.
The summit will take place on May 20th, 2009 from 1-4 PM at the White Stag Block in Portland. The summit is sponsored and hosted by University of Oregon Emergency Management Program and the current co-sponsors include:
- Oregon Emergency Management (OEM)
- Oregon Partnership for Disaster Resilience (OPDR)
- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region 10
- International Association of Emergency Managers (IEAM)-Universities and Colleges Committee (UCC)
There are three primary goals of this summit:
- 2. Update participants on current state and national programs and resources geared toward higher education institutions; and
- 3. Discuss needs, issues and possible collaborations.
A integrated systems approach to emergency management will assure that a university is not only prepared to respond to crises and disasters, but will also identify opportunities to mitigate risk and prevent loss; and establish continuity and recovery strategies for all types of events.
Participant Requirements:
The summit is intended for university and/or college administrators, emergency management, public safety, environmental health, and facility professionals charged with making our campuses safer and more disaster resilient.
