LEXINGTON, Ky. – All new faculty and staff members of the University of Kentucky (UK) will now be subject to state and national criminal background checks.
The new policy, which will go into effect July 12, was prompted by a recently enacted state law that cracks down on sex offenders and criminals who have committed violent offenses. It will also allow UK officials to deny housing to students or evict them if they have been convicted of a sex crime or violent crime.
The other universities in Kentucky’s state school system have yet to develop their own policies.
Since 1967, UK employees have been required to disclose their criminal histories. The school has conducted criminal background checks of UK doctors for the past five years.
