University of Kentucky to Conduct Background Checks of New Employees

Published: May 20, 2006

LEXINGTON, Ky. – All new faculty and staff members of the University of Kentucky (UK) will now be subject to state and national criminal background checks.

The new policy, which will go into effect July 12, was prompted by a recently enacted state law that cracks down on sex offenders and criminals who have committed violent offenses. The other universities in Kentucky’s state school system have yet to develop their own policies.

Since 1967, UK employees have been required to disclose their criminal histories. The school has conducted criminal background checks of UK doctors for the past five years.
