MANAO, Hawaii – A student protest at the University of Hawaii at Manoa on Dec. 11 demanded campus security establish a set of protocols and procedures to regulate when and how campus security can use physical force.
The Associated Students of the University of Hawaii (ASUH) also passed a resolution calling for a committee to establish regulatory oversight of the university’s security patrol officers.
The protest comes after several incidents involving the alleged use of excessive force by campus security, the most recent being the Dec. 6 arrests of two female students who, protestors claimed, were unnecessarily injured by campus security.
According to the university Vice Chancellor Neal Smatresk, campus security already operates by established procedures and is accountable to school administrators.
