TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In response to a recent wave of shootings and break-ins, the University of Alabama Police Department (UAPD) has created a new security resources branch. It will operate only on university property and will complement current UAPD policing.
The new division has uniformed, unarmed security officers patrolling the campus and residence halls 24 hours a day. One of them will be stationed at Julia Tutwiler Hall at all times.
In addition to the patrol officers, the unit has locksmiths and alarm specialists to secure university buildings.
The division is part of a broad effort to make the campus more secure. Residence halls now require electronic pass-cards to enter, and video cameras have been installed near the entrances to dorms and academic buildings.
