Last year, as many as 34 colleges and universities applied for permits to fly unmanned surveillance drones over campuses for scientific research. However, many opponents have voiced concerns over privacy.
Higher education institutions that have applied for the permit for research are Cornell University, the University of Michigan, the University of Florida and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
The Georgia Institute of Technology requested a permit for two small helicopter drones to assist in monitoring school grounds; however, the school was denied. Additionally, some experts say the drones in daily monitoring operations would likely be ineffective, FoxNews.com reports.
