In response to the recent spate of bomb threats being experienced nationwide, the University of Central Florida (UCF), in conjunction with the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the Office for Bombing Prevention within the National Protection and Programs Directorate’s Office of Infrastructure Protection, has just released a 4-minute training video that teaches viewers how to respond in the event they receive a bomb threat.
UCF partnered with local DHS Protective Security Advisor Marty Smith to develop the training video for campus employees.
DHS also has a bomb threat checklist that can be downloaded here.
Some of the basic steps a person should take when they receive a bomb threat include:
- Remain calm.
- Call 9-1-1 immediately and report a bomb threat to local law enforcement providing as much detail as you can.
- Follow law enforcement instructions.
- Evacuate the area and seek protective cover from the bomb and potential debris-these are the best ways to avoid injury.
- Do NOT approach or inspect suspicious items or unattended packages.
- Do NOT congregate near the incident scene as onlookers may impede first responders and law enforcement.
