UNCW Police Expands Jurisdiction Outside Campus

WILMINGTON, N.C.
Published: August 6, 2009

Effective in September, campus police at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington (UNCW) will expand their jurisdiction to cover more neighborhoods surrounding the campus thanks to a unanimous vote from the Wilmington City Council, reports WECT.com.

Many residents who live near the campus said the loud college parties are disruptive, so the presence of the UNCW officers would be beneficial. Additionally, residents said UNCW police would be able to respond more quickly to calls than city police officers.

However, UNCW Police Chief David Donaldson said campus police will not patrol any areas off campus nor respond to phone calls. Instead, if the department is conducting an investigation and witnesses someone breaking the law, it will take action.
