AMHERST, Mass. — The University of Massachusetts will spend more than $2 million to improve the safety of 51 residence halls.
University officials hired a security consultant to review campus safety following a report of gang rape in March when four teenagers allegedly raped a female student living in one of the freshmen dormitories. Three of the suspects were signed into the residence hall by someone who did not know them, a student code violation. The other was not signed in at all, MassLive.com reports.
The consulting firm, New York-based Business Protection Specialists offered 87 recommendations for the university to implement, including installing a computerized visitor entry system.
Additionally, the consultant addressed residence hall layout, nuisance alarm activation and remediation. UMass plans to hire a third party to guarantee that it is meeting crime reporting in a timely manner and meeting federal standards.
