Orono, Maine — A social media threat prompted the University of Maine (UMaine) to postpone a baseball doubleheader with the University of Hartford that was scheduled for Sunday.
Both teams were warming up and then exited the Mahaney Diamond Complex when they received news of the threat. They waited for awhile to see if the situation would be resolved quickly, but it didn’t, so they cancelled the set of games.
What exactly was being threatened has not been disclosed by authorities, but it was serious enough to put the UMaine campus on high alert. Authorities announced that they are attempting to locate Afshin Zarechian, 20.
Members of the Orona community were urged to “remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings” by campus police, reports News Center Maine.
Despite the threat, classes were not cancelled on Monday and the campus is not on lockdown. A UMaine spokesperson said they do not believe Zarechian is in the area but were taking precautions anyway, such as adding extra police patrols on campus.
Zarechian was last seen driving an older model green BMW, New Hampshire plate RICCH. Zarechian is 5’ 9”, 150 lbs., dark hair/eyes/complexion. Police are urging anyone who sees him or his car to call (207) 581-4040.
