A University of Arizona sophomore has been arrested after allegedly attempting to suffocate her newborn baby by placing him in a plastic bag in a dormitory room on campus.

The 19-year-old student has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and felony child abuse. The baby, who was full term and weighed 7 pounds, was “gasping for breath” when police untied the bag, according to campus police.

A physician estimated the infant was in the bag for at least two hours, reported the Tucson Citizen. He is recovering at University Medical Center and is in critical condition.
