According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF), the total number of police officer fatalities this year are up to 63, compared to 46 at the same time in 2013.
Firearms-related deaths are experiencing the biggest rise, from 15 last year to 23 this year, which amounts to a 53% increase. Traffic-related fatalities have increased by 39%, from 18 in 2013 to 25 in 2014. Deaths from other causes are up 15% so far this year.
California has experienced the most law enforcement officer deaths (eight), while four officers in Florida and four officer in Virginia have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Georgia, New York, Oklahoma and Texas have each lost three officers in 2014.
