MADISON, Wis. — Throughout the University of Wisconsin (UW) system’s 13 campuses, only three have more than half of students, faculty and staff signed up to receive emergency text alerts.
As a whole, the university system has a participation of roughly 32%, WisconsinWatch.org reports. UW-Platteville automatically enrolls the campus community into the text alert program and gives users the opportunity to “opt out.” Similarly, UW-Stevens Point also implements the same method and has a participation rate of 88%.
Meanwhile other schools in the system use the “opt-in” approach. Currently, UW-Parkside boasts a participation rate of 65%, while only 25% of students, staff and faculty have joined UW-Madison’s program. Some schools, like UW-Whitewater, have no text alert system.
