MISSOULA, Mont. — University of Montana President Royce Engstrom is standing by the school’s handling of the most recent reports of sexual assault on campus, after the university’s newspaper claimed officials waited a week to turn over the name of a suspect to police.
Engstrom said the incidents were addressed the day they were reported, NBC Montana reports. An E-mail that was sent out to the campus community said that two possible sexual assaults had occurred on campus when, in fact, only one had been reported. Engstrom stated that the university was erring on the side of caution, but “The communications that have come out recently left, I think, the impression that we sat around before we did anything, and that absolutely is not the case.”
The E-mail referred to two incidents: one in which a woman claimed she was raped, and another in which a woman said she was provided illegal drugs and alcohol by another student — which did not include an allegation of sexual assault.
