ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan (UM) has hired a former director of the Michigan State Police as the executive director of the UM Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS).
Eddie Washington Jr., will start his role on July 23, pending approval from the university’s Board of Regents. If approved, Washington will take over for UM Police Chief Joe Piersante, who has served as interim executive director of DPSS since its creation in October, AnnArbor.com reports.
UM created DPSS in response to an external investigation into why it took administrators at UM’s Health System six months to report that former medical resident Stephen Jenson allegedly possessed child pornography. DPSS consists of four divisions including the UM Police Department, Hospital Security, Housing Security and University Security Services. The leads for all departments will report to Washington, who will report directly to the university president.
