AMHERST, Mass.—The University of Massachusetts (UMass) has received $368,000 in emergency planning grants from state and federal governments.
UMass will spend $50,000 in state funding to pay for two trailers equipped with sheltering supplies, including folding cots, blankets and pillows, to serve at least 200 people, reports MassLive.com. The trailers are expected to arrive at the beginning of the new school year.
Additionally, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), awarded the university with a three-year grant for $143,000 to do a pre-disaster mitigation plan, which allows the school to plan for natural disasters and permits each building on campus to be evaluated for how it would withstand those disasters.
FEMA also issued UMass a $175,000 grant that allows the school to examine more specific kinds of emergencies, such as threats to the information technology (IT) structure on campus.
