DES MOINES, Iowa — The University of Iowa will not receive federal funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to replace its flood-damaged Museum of Art.
Damaged during a 2008 flood, the UI Museum of Art sustained roughly $4 million worth in damage. In 2010, FEMA determined that UI’s building damage did not meet its threshold for replacement, and denied both of the university’s replacement appeals in January 2011 and April 2012, Iowa City Press-Citizen reports.
In the latest attempt, university officials sought to obtain funding for a mitigation project, which FEMA denied. UI personnel are currently looking for a new venue to store its roughly $500 million art collection, which cannot be insured in the building at its current site.
