U. of Iowa at Fault for Response to Alleged Assault, Report Says

Published: September 23, 2008

IOWA CITY, Iowa – An independent review reports that the University of Iowa did not handle an alleged sexual assault case properly, although the university did not try to cover up any information.

A St. Louis-based law firm, Stolar Partnership, conducted the study and then reported the results to the Board of Regents. Nearly a year ago, two former football players were accused of attacking a female athlete in her dormitory.

Although the athletic department followed procedure, investigators still find the university at fault because the policies and procedures the university implements are confusing.

Additionally, investigators said the institution failed to protect the victim from being harassed. A third party of investigators recommended that the university should have a rape advocate on campus so students who have been sexually assaulted can come forward. Also, it is recommended that policies allowing for informal investigations for violent crimes be eliminated.
