DETROIT — The University of Detroit Mercy’s (UDM) new policy that requires all students, staff and faculty to wear their university IDs while on campus has been criticized by some members of the campus community.
University officials issued the policy to keep unwanted visitors off school grounds, as the all UDM campuses have experienced an uptick in thefts, The Varsity News reports. The ID requirement serves as a layer of campus security between the gates and the interior of the buildings, where the previously wasn’t a checkpoint, according to UDM officials.
Those opposed to the policy believe that it puts students at risk of identity theft because they are now compelled to display a badge with their full name on campus. Additionally, the opposition maintains that school officials should improve security at the main gates first rather than impose a badging rule.
