U. of California Medical School Creates Task Force After Security Breaches

Published: June 2, 2008

SAN FRANCISCO – After two security breaches affecting patient medical information at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), officials have formed a task force to help improve security conditions.

In October, information for 6,300 patients was exposed on the Internet for several months after the university sent the information to a vendor for fundraising purposes. Many patients were upset because the university did not inform them of the breach until six months after it occurred.

The second breach was detected Jan. 11 during a routine check when officials discovered a movie-sharing program had been downloaded illegally on a faculty member’s computer. The computer contained patient information, including names and Social Security numbers of 2,625 patients.

Patients and healthcare providers were informed of the breach on May 28.
