U. of California Files Restraining Order to Delay Strike

Published: May 28, 2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The University of California (UC) has filed a temporary restraining order against the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) in order to prevent more than 19,000 patient care and service employees from striking.

On May 23, AFSCME announced that UC patient care and service workers would hold a two-day strike June 4 and 5. The announcement of the strike comes after 10 months of failed wage negotiations between the university system and its workers.

The strike would affect medical centers at UCLA, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC San Diego and UC San Francisco. Additionally, 10 other UC campuses would be impacted by the strike.

The UC system filed charges with the Public Employees Relations Board (PERB) ON May 27 against Local 3299 of the AFSCME, citing that the union has not been negotiating in good faith. If the restraining order is granted, it could legally ban the union from striking.
