BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a religious-freedom legal group, has filed a lawsuit against the University of Buffalo, citing that the school charged an anti-abortion group $650 for security guards to monitor an abortion debate. The lawsuit notes that other student groups that have hosted similar events were not charged such fees.
On April 18, UB Students for Life, an officially recognized student organization at the university, held a pro-life abortion debate. However, school officials deemed the topic as controversial and instructed the organization to hire university police to attend the event, Fox News reports. The group was charged a $650 security fee, $150 more than the entire amount of the funding it receives from the Student Association.
At the same time, another student group hosted a debate between a Christian and an atheist in the same building. That group was not charged a security fee, according to ADF.
The lawsuit further states that the security fee policy violates the First Amendment, as it allows college officials “unbridled discretion” to discriminate against speech based on viewpoint.
