The Department of Public Safety (DPS) at the University of Hawaii is researching ways to develop a more centralized video surveillance system on its campuses.
Currently, each school, building or department may choose to have its own surveillance or access control system. Officials are looking for a way to create a more collaborative approach, Kaleo reports. A survey conducted by DPS indicates many students believe they would be safer if more cameras were deployed.
There are currently cameras in places like elevators and emergency call boxes, but those are not on a live feed, officials said. All departments at the university will be working together to develop a new surveillance plan to increase security.
