Two Psychiatric Patients Escape from Oregon Hospital

SALEM, Ore. – After two patients escaped from Oregon State Hospital within weeks of each other, Oregon Senate President Peter Courtney is seeking an independent review of the facility’s security measures, according to Salem News.

On July 11, Michael Sands overpowered a staff member and escaped from the hospital’s psychiatric unit. The following morning, Sands was recaptured.

Five days later, another patient, Mitchell Grigsby, was on a supervised walk when he ran off the hospital grounds. Grigsby was returned minutes after escaping.

Courtney believes a new facility needs to be built immediately; however, a new hospital won’t be ready until 2011.
