UTICA, N.Y. — Campus police from Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) arrested two men during a Black Student Union dance when a large fight broke out. It took officers nearly an hour to control the situation, even with assistance from other police agencies.

Jama Mohamoud, a student at MVCC, was charged with disorderly conduct, second-degree harassment and resisting arrest, the Utica Observer-Dispatch reports. Shamar Smith, who is not a student, was charged with disorderly conduct.

After Mohamoud and Smith were charged, several other fights broke out among the 400 attendees. State police, Frankfort police, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and MVCC campus security were called to the event.

Due to the fighting, the dance was shut down an hour early.
