NEW YORK – As many as three State University of New York Oswego students overdosed on heroin Saturday, leaving one student dead and two others hospitalized.
Police discovered the body of the student who died on campus. The other two students were found off campus and were taken to Oswego Hospital, WRVO.org reports.
The names of the students have not been released. It is unclear whether the overdoses were related.
When SUNY Oswego officials learned about the incident, a mass E-mail and text message, which read “Danger: Oswego heroin may be lethal. One person is dead; two are hospitalized. Please beware!” was immediately sent out to the campus community.
School officials noted that heroin is a fairly new problem on the SUNY Oswego campus. To combat the issue, the university plans to push education and outreach opportunities about the campus’ drug policy.
Health officials in Philadelphia are also issuing warnings about heroin—specifically a deadly mix of heroin and fentanyl—that has killed at least 28 people in the city recently. NBC10.com is reporting that most of the fatalities occurred between March 3 and April 20.
UPDATE: Two men have been arrested in connection to the SUNY Oswego overdoses: Brian Tomolo, 21, who is not a SUNY student, and Gabriel Gonzalez, 22, who is a student and was one of the individuals who overdosed. Police say Tomolo sold heroin to Gonzalez who, in turn, sold it to the student who died.
