Trend Alert: Nitrous Oxide Canisters Used to Get High

Nitrous oxide canisters designed to make whipped cream — such as the product “Whip-it!” — are being used by some to achieve a brief high. Reports claim that actress Demi Moore inhaled the gas before she was hospitalized this week for a “seizure” and shaking.

The canisters can be purchased online or in the kitchen supply aisle of stores, New York Daily News reports. Inhaling the gas deprives the brain of oxygen and can cause long-term problems, such as memory loss. There are concerns that Moore’s reported use of the gas may inspire others to try it.

Mixing nitrous oxide with alcohol or other drugs increases the risk of injury or death.
