A special education teacher was stabbed to death in his classroom at John Tyler High School on Sept. 23. A 16-year-old student has been placed in police custody.
According to officials, Todd Henry, a music therapist who taught special needs students, was in a classroom with a ratio of three students to two adults when the incident occurred. The school was temporarily placed on lockdown.
The boy in custody is being held at a juvenile detention center and could face murder charges.
The incident has raised many concerns about the school’s security. Some hall monitors were removed from the school, which officials said is a result of a security plan that is being put in place and not because of budget cuts. However, in an effort to bolster security, school officials have instituted mobile metal detectors and are looking to hire a security consultant to implement a better plan.
In addition, the school has two TISD police officers on campus regularly. When the stabbing incident occurred, there were actually six officers on campus, as an unrelated fight had taken place on campus prior to the stabbing.
