Texas School Board Votes to Arm Teachers

LEVELLAND, Texas —The Levelland Independent School District (LISD) board voted to allow teachers to carry guns in the classroom on March 21.

The new policy requires teachers to obtain a concealed-handgun license, pass a gun-training course and receive approval from the LISD superintendent, ABC News reports. School officials say the policy is in response to the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the movie theater in Aurora, Colo.

The district has approximately 3,000 students and 485 staff members spread across eight campus. Before reaching a decision, LISD officials did extensive research and held a series of meetings to discuss the policy change. The district wants to have two armed employees per campus.
