AUSTIN – According to the Associated Press, more than 70 employees at the 10 state mental hospitals in Texas were fired in 2005 over accusations of brutal beatings and other physical abuse. Others were disciplined.
Currently in the state’s psychiatric hospital system, there are around 18,000 patients and 7,400 employees. According to disciplinary records, which were obtained by the Dallas Morning News, employees were accused of performing chokeholds and headlocks on patients, as well as threatening them.
Additionally, other employees were fired for sleeping on the job and overmedicating patients.
