Texas Higher Ed Institutions to Perform Dorm Background Checks

DENISON, Texas — Governor Rick Perry has given public colleges and universities in Texas the authority to dig into students’ backgrounds before allowing them to live on campus.

With the approval, public higher education institutions can access the Department of Public Safety’s Web site to perform background checks on students applying for campus housing, KXII.com reports. Only the housing administrator and the campus police chief will have access to the records.

Some have raised questions about the new law, as the DPS Web site only shows charges that have occurred in Texas, not other states or countries. Additionally, the law doesn’t require universities to perform background checks; rather, that is the decision of each individual institution.
