Tennessee Student Released from Hospital after Being Shot

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Manassas High School was locked down briefly as a precaution to a shooting on campus Oct. 24.

Markees Smith, 15, was taken into custody after shooting his 16-year-old classmate in the arm. The shooting took place in a classroom, authorities said. Both are 11th grade boys who were described as friends.

Smith is charged with carrying a gun on school property, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

Police said that Smith had planned to sell the gun that wounded the victim and was playing around with the weapon in his coat pocket when he accidentally fired it.

The injured student was released from the hospital with a minor gunshot wound.

While the school does have metal detectors, they were not being used on the morning of the shooting.
