NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A man who wanted to talk about his Christian beliefs at Tennessee Tech has won a case after police asked him to leave campus because he had not given two-weeks’ notice or disclosed his discussion topic.
The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that the university’s policy violated the First Amendment, The Nashville Tennessean reports. John McGlone, who initially lost the lawsuit in trial court, spoke with the dean of student affairs and other offices but was unable to get permission to talk at a campus venue in a reasonable amount of time. When we tried to talk to students anyway, he was asked to leave or face arrest by campus police.
The Tennessee Board of Regents has adopted a policy that goes into effect June 1. The policy reduces the notice required to five days.
