DICKSON COUNTY, Tenn. – County Mayor Bob Rial will ask the county commission to postpone implementing the county’s building maintenance plan for a year so that schools can receive $500,000 in security upgrades.
The amount proposed is about a third of the $1.5 million in improvements that were recommended shortly after the Newtown, Conn., mass school shooting, reports the Tennessean. The school district asked for $750,000.
The upgrades include front entrance and main lobby redesigns to limit access, new doors, video surveillance, new bus radios, safe rooms and metal barricades for classrooms. Additional SROs were considered but were not deemed fiscally feasible.
