Teenager Arrested for Taking 2 Hostages At School

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A 17-year-old has been charged for holding a student and teacher hostage on April 24 at East Chapel Hill High School.

William Barrett Foster will face assault, possession of a firearm on educational property and discharging a firearm on educational property charges. During the alleged incident, he fired two shots but not in the direction of the two female hostages. Neither the victims nor the suspect were injured during the hour-long ordeal.

The incident has prompted the district to review its security procedures. Restricted access, improved lighting and better surveillance are some of the revisions being considered.
