MANSFIELD, Ohio – A 15-year-old was in critical condition Feb. 19 after being shot in the face outside a hospital emergency room.
According to police, the victim, Jacques Sutton, was chased by several other teenage males outside the emergency room entrance of MedCentral/Mansfield Hospital when an unnamed 14-year-old suspect shot him in the right cheek with a .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun.
Immediately after the shots were fired, hospital security officer Dan Robinson tackled the alleged gunman and handcuffed him before the suspect could follow the victim into the hospital. Other citizens in the waiting room and an off-duty corrections officer also helped restrain the gunman. No hospital staff or patients were injured in the incident.
Sutton was immediately treated then later flown to Columbus Children’s Hospital where his medical status was upgraded.
Police say the suspect is being held in a juvenile detention facility and will most likely face attempted murder charges.
