LOS ANGELES – Sheriff’s detectives arrested a 16-year-old suspect for the fatal stabbing of another student at a Southern California High School.
The stabbing took place March 23 at Washington Preparatory High School in the Athens area of Los Angeles. The 17-year-old Latino victim was attacked by two black teens shortly after school let out at 3 p.m. The second suspect is still being sought. None of the boys’ names have been released.
Officials believe the violence may have been gang related and racially motivated. District officials say students are regularly checked for weapons, but it is unclear how the knife made it on campus. The knife used in the stabbing was found on a rooftop at the school.
Grief counselors and additional security will be on campus March 26.
