WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Canada — A teenager accused of starting a fire at Winnipeg’s Children’s Hospital, forcing nearly 100 patients to evacuate the building, has been ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation.
The 16-year-old boy, whose name has not been released, was being treated at the hospital when he allegedly started the March 5 blaze with an incendiary device. He’s suspected of gaining access to an under-construction imaging center adjacent to the facility and setting fire to a tarp. The $1-million arson caused significant damage, Winnipeg Free Press reports.
At the time of the incident, the youth, who was considered a flight risk during his stay at WCH, managed to slip away from staff members and was missing for a period of time, authorities said. Police arrested the boy on July 27 after he turned himself into police.
