A teacher has been suspended from his Florida high school for using a signal jammer to stop his students’ cellphone use during class.
Dan Liptak, a science teacher at Fivay High School, was suspended for five days after activating a cell phone jamming device to block phone communications with a cell tower on campus, according to cbsnews.com.
The five-day, unpaid suspension was approved by the Pasco County school board on June 2 and Liptak will not challenge the decision.
Officials said the jammer was activated from March 31 until April 2. Liptak told school investigators that he thought jammers were allowed if they weren’t being used for malicious purposes.
District Superintendent Kurt Browning said Liptak may have violated federal law by blocking his student’s ability to call 911.
