Teachers rallied outside a New York school April 17 after a colleague was allegedly assaulted inside a middle school two days earlier.
An adult and a juvenile were arrested in connection with an alleged attack on a middle school math teacher that sent the victim to the hospital, according to 6abc.com. A picture appeared to show the teacher unconscious on the ground after Annika McKenzie, 34, allegedly breached school security, waited outside a classroom and put the teacher in a headlock before several students punched and kicked the teacher.
McKenzie’s niece was the other person arrested, and the confrontation was apparently fueled by an incident earlier in the day when McKenzie alleges the teacher “put her hands on” her 12-year-old daughter.
In response teachers from a nearby middle school wore all black and chanted “our safety matters” outside of Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School in Hempstead where the attack took place.
The victim has been released from the hospital and is recovering.
