Teacher Strike Closes Schools in Gary, Indiana

Published: August 27, 2006

GARY, Ind. – Classes in Gary, Ind., were cancelled indefinitely on Aug. 24 due to a teacher strike.

The closure occurred after picketing teachers swarmed a car trying to park at an elementary school. Two of the teachers were slightly hurt during the incident.

District officials closed the city’s 29 schools because they say the current climate is not conducive to student safety, nor does it foster a healthy climate for learning.

More than 800 of Gary’s teachers and paraprofessionals voted to strike the week earlier. Their contract expired in December 2004.
